Our Heroes

We have all kinds of heroes who help us do all the things we do with the ultimate goal of finding that "perfect" home for our four (and sometimes three) legged friends.  As we have heard many times, "it takes a village," and nothing could be more true.

We want to take this opportunity to thank Donna Rogers, graphic artist, for all the help she has given us with the updated design of our logo and most recently, the design of our new business cards.  We have also utilized our revised look in this new website, newsletters, newspaper advertisements and flyers.  It has become a recognizable symbol for us and what we do and we're very proud of our new look.  Thank you, Donna!   (www.themislitigation.com)

Heidi with Clover (who is available for adoption)

Eight year old Heidi Preacher is "our hero" for the second year in a row!!!  Once again, Heidi, a student at Landmark Christian School, asked her birthday guests to bring food for the FCHS animals instead of gifts for her.  Heidi chose us because we're a local organization and she is able to meet some of our volunteers as well as some of our animals that are available for adoption.  She is a tremendous animal lover and enjoys her 13 year old Golden Retriever at home.  Thank you AGAIN Heidi for your very kind and generous donation.  You are definitely a hero to us and our animals

Bradley Gibson was going to be celebrating his 11th birthday, and unlike many young people, Bradley didn't think of what he himself wanted for his birthday.  Instead, he chose to have those who join in his birthday celebration do something for others....and Bradley chose the animals in the care of the Fayette County Humane Society.  Bradley and his friends donated an abundance of much needed food and other items which he presented to us at a recent PetSmart adoption.  Thank you, Bradley, for having such a kind and giving heart.  You have helped make a difference!

Homeless to Hero

The National Detector Dog Training Center (NDDTC), located in Newnan, provides a positive learning environment while training detector dogs to safeguard our American agriculture.  They have developed innovative ways for the dog and handler teams to prevent pests and agricultural diseases from entering the US through our airports, international borders, postal facilities as well as cargo areas.  They train Beagle/Beagle mixes, Lab/Lab mixes and Jack Russell Terriers/JRT mixes to work in a wide variety of environments ranging from airport baggage claim to postal facilities as well as cargo warehouses and border checkpoints.

The NDDTC looks for dogs to train for the various programs they offer at local shelters and rescue groups such as FCHS.  When a dog is located, they perform an extensive temperament test.    They also rate food drive and the dog’s reaction to public places and crowds of people.  The dogs goes through a battery of testing by a veterinarian including testing for heartworms, blood analyses, and x-rays of the hips and spine.  Dogs are vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

One such program includes the Brown Tree Snake Program in Guam.  The Brown Tree Snake has caused extensive economic and ecological damage to the island of Guam.  It is responsible for power outages and because it is an opportunistic feeder, it has eradicated most of Guam’s native forest birds.

Skip, a Jack Russell Terrier the FCHS rescued from a shelter when his time was up, proved to be the perfect candidate for the Brown Tree Snake Program.  Not long after he was rescued, his fosters, Robin Sockness and Steve Snelgrove, recognized something special about him.  Skip was an active dog with a keen intelligence and clearly needed to have a “job.”   Robin contacted the folks at the NDDTC and had Skip evaluated.  He passed his evaluation easily and subsequently progressed through the training program at an accelerated rate.

Skip graduated from the program on November 4th and moved to Guam with his handler on November 11th.

We at the FCHS are so proud of Skip.  He's taking on a real job and is making a difference for the people and wildlife of Guam.

A giant "THANK YOU" goes to Cadette Girl Scout Troop 187, hosts of the annual Cookie Kick Off for Service Unit 616 in Fayetteville.  This event kicks off the cookie selling season, and is also used to gather donations for a local charity.  The charitable organization for the 2010 Cookie Kick Off was the Fayette County Humane Society.  The scouts of Service Unit 616 donated dog and cat food, dog and cat treats, cat litter, and blankets to the Fayette Humane Society.   Thank you for thinking of US!

We'd like everyone to meet Ian Mednick, a very special young man!  Ian just turned 4 and instead of everyone bringing a birthday gift to his birthday party for him, he asked for dog food, cat food, and kitty litter to help the needy dogs and cats at the FCHS!  Ian, THANK YOU for making a difference in the lives of others.

Coleen Schuetz, property manager, and her assistant Patricia Spruell

We want to express a very big "thank you" to Peachtree City Storage and Colleen Schuetz, property manager, for donating a storage space in their facility located at 126 Huddleston Road in Peachtree City.  Their location is very close to the Peachtree City PetSmart where we hold our Saturday and Sunday adoptions and this has enabled us to have many of the items we need located close by with easy access.  This has been a great help in making the logistical aspect of our organization so much easier.  Thank you!!

Jeff Waddy, owner of Affordable Signs & Awards, 225 Industrial Way in Fayetteville, has been a great supporter of the FCHS.  Jeff has worked with us numerous times developing signs, name tags, awards and business cards and he has made several donations as well, including a large banner for us to use at events.  Thank you, Jeff, for all your help and support!

Meet Our Heroes at Tack Trolley

Some time ago, the FCHS received a wonderful offer from Janet Hopkins, owner of Tack Trolley in Fayetteville.  Janet offered us her Fayetteville store to use as we wished and we were delighted.

Janet's store features supplies for horses as well as cats and dogs.  Behind her store on South Highway 85 between Rite Aid and Ultimate Fitness, she has a large warehouse space with outdoor covered areas.  This allows us to hold our monthly Fayetteville adoptions outdoors when weather permits and indoors when it's cold or rainy.  We have also held two large yard sales there benefiting the FCHS and plan to have another in the spring.  Check our "current and upcoming events" page for dates and times of these events.

Janet and her staff are "heroes" to us and the animals who benefit from their generosity.  Thank you!!!

CAT AND DOG CHRISTMAS STOCKING DONATIONS

Scouts from Troop 491 from the Counterpane Montessori School in Fayetteville participated in a service project and filled Christmas stockings for dogs and cats adopted through the Fayette County Humane Society.  Lizzie Todd was the organizer of this special project.  She gave empty stockings to fellow scouts and classmates to fill with dog or cat treats and toys.  She then collected them and delivered the stuffed stockings to our Saturday adoption on December 12th.  There were many cat and dog adoptions that day and most of the stockings were distributed with the balance being given the following day.  All the new pet owners were very excited to receive the stockings and the cats and dogs will benefit from all the goodies.  Our sincere thanks go to Lizzie, her troop, and her friends for their kindness and generosity.

A BIG THANK YOU TO EDWARD JONES

Bruce Sutherland’s office of Edward Jones in Peachtree City asked clients to bring  donations for the FCHS to their Christmas open house.  They were able to collect over $400 in supplies and monetary donations. THANK YOU, Bruce and Jane, for asking clients to donate items and THANK YOU to all the clients and supporters who made donations!!!  Many animals will benefit from your holiday generosity.
